Technology

Check out on You Tube , the video, "Pay Attention" It highlights the many benefits of using technology in the classroom. Surprising how simple and accessile it is to introduce technology into the classroom. If you cant get You Tube then go to http://www.teachertube.com/ to access the video since You Tube is blocked in the schools

Whether we like it or not, technology MUST be intergrated in our teaching. We compete with the internet, TV, videos, cellphones and a myriad of other devices and gateways that our students turn to for information and entertainment (yes, entertainment as well; sometimes we need to turn into entertainers to keep the students' interest high).

The students hold a powerful tool - a mental remote control - and they can turn us off whenever they want; unless of course we keep their interest high enough so they will want to hear a little more of what we have to say or participate in a class activity. It's not an easy task, but as a principal was quoted in the video to have said, "If you can't beat them, join them."

It's challenging enough for us as teachers to worry about the traditional items that we are concened with - content, assessments, classwork, homework, etc - to now have to plan to purposefully incorporate technology into our instruction on a regular basis (and it doesn't mean that even if we do, results will be what we hope they will be). Neverthless, we need to make an effort and try different approaches such as the ones suggested in the video (or whatever else we think of). Yet, with a little tweak here and a little adjustment there, we may just be able to "pull in" a few more students than we would have were we not to try such novel instructional approaches. I for one love the possibility to collaborate with another school (even abroad) in doing a project (and it doesn't have to be anything major).
